The greatist and most amiable privilege which the rich enjoy over the poor is that which they exercise the least - the privilege of making others happy True friendship is like sound health; the value of it is seldom known until it be lost. There is this difference between happiness and wisdom, that he that thinks himself the happiest man really is so; but he that thinks himself the wisest is generally the greatest fool. Many speak the truth when they say that they despise riches, but they mean the riches possessed by others. Friendship often ends in love; but love in friendship - never. Anguish of mind has driven thousands to suicide; anguish of body, none. This proves that the health of the mind is of far more consequence to our happiness, than the health of the body, although both are deserving of much more attention than either of them receive. The three great apostles of practical atheism, that make converts without persecuting, and retain them without preaching, are wealth, health, and power. We ought not be over anxious to encourage innovation, in case of doubtful improvement, for an old system must ever have two advantages over a new one; it is established and it is understood. To know the pains of power, we must go to those who have it; to know its pleasures, we must go to those who are seeking it. The pains of power are real; its pleasures imaginary. To dare to live alone is the rarest courage; since there are many who had rather meet their bitterest enemy in the field, than their own hearts in their closet. |
