The ultimate solution to the race problem lies in the willingness of men to obey the unenforceable. Psychological freedom, a firm sense of self-esteem, is the most powerful weapon against the long night of physical slavery. To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing. Property is intended to serve life, and no matter how much we surround it with rights and respect, it has no personal being. It is part of the earth man walks on. It is not man. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. We must build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear. We must combine the toughness of the serpent with the softness of the dove, a tough mind and a tender heart. We refuse to believe that there is insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people. When evil men plot, good men must plan. When evil men burn and bomb, good men must build and bind. When evil men shout ugly words of hatred, good men must commit themselves to the glories of love. |
