Egotism is nature's compensation for mediocrity. Tradition is what you resort to when you don't have the time or the money to do it right. It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society. Life is made up of constant calls to action, and we seldom have time for more than hastily contrived answers. A man never stands as tall as when he kneels to help a child. Liberty lies in the hearts of men and women; when it dies there, no constitution, no law, no court can save it.... While it lies there, it needs no constitution, no law, no court to save it. Life is short; live it up. I have seen soldiers panic at the first sight of battle, and a wounded squire pulling arrows out from his wound to fight and save his dying horse. Nobility is not a birth right but is defined by one's action. Each of us has a spark of life inside us, and our highest endeavor ought to be to set off that spark in one another. Lack of money is no obstacle. Lack of an idea is an obstacle. |
