Democracy arose from men's thinking that if they are equal in any respect, they are equal absolutely. There was never a genius without a tincture of madness. Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit. It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. It is the mark of an educated mind to rest satisfied with the degree of precision which the nature of the subject admits and not to seek exactness where only an approximation is possible. Those who educate children well are more to be honored than parents, for these only gave life, those the art of living well. In the arena of human life the honors and rewards fall to those who show their good qualities in action. Friendship is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies. What is a friend?
