What the statesman is most anxious to produce is a certain moral character in his fellow citizens, namely a disposition to virtue and the performance of virtuous actions. When their adventures do not succeed, however, they run away; but it was the mark of a brave man to face things that are, and seem, terrible for a man, because it is noble to do so and disgraceful not to do so. Where some people are very wealthy and others have nothing, the result will be either extreme democracy or absolute oligarchy, or despotism will come from either of those excesses. Wishing to be friends is quick work, but friendship is slow-ripening fruit. To die will be an awfully big adventure. Quality is not an act, it is a habit. It is the characteristic of the magnanimous man to ask no favor but to be ready to do kindness to others. It is well to be up before daybreak, for such habits contribute to health, wealth, and wisdom. Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies. Man, when perfected, is the best of animals, but when separated from law and justice, he is the worst of all. |
