Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him. I speak to the black experience, but I am always talking about the human condition - about what we can endure, dream, fail at, and still survive. If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude. I am always talking about the human condition and about American society in particular: what it is like to be human, what makes us weep, what makes us fall and stumble and somehow rise and go on from darkness into darkness and that darkness carpeted with figures of fear and the hounds behind and the hunters behind and one more river to cross and oh, my God, will I ever reach that somewhere, that safe-getting-up morning.
