Live life to the fullest. Never mistake motion for action. For a long time now I have tried simply to write the best I can. Sometimes I have good luck and write better than I can. A man can be destroyed but not defeated. Writing and travel broaden your ass if not your mind and I like to write standing up. A beautiful vacuum filled with wealthy monogamists, all powerful and members of the best families all drinking themselves to death. But in modern war you will die like a dog for no good reason. A man's got to take a lot of punishment to write a really funny book. Bullfighting is the only art in which the artist is in danger of death and in which the degree of brilliance in the performance is left to the fighter's honor. All good books are alike in that they are truer than if they had really happened and after you are finished reading one you will feel that all that happened to you and afterwards it all belongs to you; the good and the bad, the ecstasy, the remorse, and sorrow, the people and the places and how the weather was. |
