All change is a miracle to contemplate; but it is a miracle which is taking place every second. Absolutely speaking, do unto others as you would that they should do unto you is by no means a golden rule, but the best of current silver. An honest man would have but little occasion for it. It is golden not to have any rule at all in such a case. A wise man will not leave the right to the mercy of chance, nor wish it to prevail through the power of the majority. There is but little virtue in the action of masses of men. A name pronounced is the recognition of the individual to whom it belongs. He who can pronounce my name aright, he can call me, and is entitled to my love and service. A man sits as many risks as he runs. A man is rich in proportion to the number of things he can afford to let alone. A man cannot be said to succeed in this life who does not satisfy one friend. As to conforming outwardly, and living your own life inwardly, I have not a very high opinion of that course. Good poetry seems too simple and natural a thing that when we meet it we wonder that all men are not always poets. Poetry is nothing but healthy speech. Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined. |
