An honest man nearly always thinks justly. The person who is slowest in making a promise is most faithful in its performance. The training of children is a profession, where we must know how to waste time in order to save it. Falsehood has an infinity of combinations, but truth has only one mode of being. Virtue is a state of war, and to live in it we have always to combat with ourselves. At sixteen, the adolescent knows about suffering because he himself has suffered, but he barely knows that other beings also suffer. Man is born free and everywhere he is in chains. Good laws lead to the making of better ones; bad ones bring about worse. Man was born free, but is everywhere in bondage. He who is most slow in making a promise is the most faithful in performance of it. |
