Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them? And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years. As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy. Better to remain silent and thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt. Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing. Democracy is the government of the people, by the people, for the people Die when I may, I want it said of me that I plucked a weed and planted a flower where ever I thought a flower would grow. I am for those means which will give the greatest good to the greatest number. I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live by the light that I have. I must stand with anybody that stands right, and stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong. I don't know who my grandfather was; I'm much more concerned to know what his grandson will be. |
