Descartes useless and uncertain. Atheists ought to say what is perfectly evident; now it is not perfectly evident that the soul is material. Immateriality of the soul, philosophers who have mastered their passions. What matter could do that? I lay is down as a fact that if all men know what others say of them, there would not be four friends in the world. If all men knew what others say of them, there would not be four friends in the world. If we do not know ourselves to be full of pride, ambition, lust, weakness, misery, and injustice, we are indeed blind. And if, knowing this, we do not desire deliverance, what can we say of a man...? I cannot forgive Descartes. In all his philosophy he would have been quite willing to dispense with God. But he had to make Him give a fillip to set the world in motion; beyond this, he has no further need of God. The property of power is to protect. Clarity of mind means clarity of passion, too; this is why a great and clear mind loves ardently and sees distinctly what he loves. For as old age is that period of life most remote from infancy, who does not see that old age in this universal man ought not to be sought in the times nearest his birth, but in those most remote from it? |
