Experience should teach us to be most on our guard to protect liberty when the Government's purposes are beneficent. Men born to freedom are naturally alert to repel invasion of their liberty by evil-minded rulers. The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding. The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances; if there is any reaction, both are transformed. When we are angry or depressed in our creativity, we have misplaced our power. We have allowed someone else to determine our worth, and then we are angry at being undervalued. Imagination is the one weapon in the war against reality. The public interest is best served by the free exchange of ideas. The only reward for love is the experience of loving. The supreme end of education is expert discernment in all things--the power to tell the good from the bad, the genuine from the counterfeit, and to prefer the good and the genuine to the bad and the counterfeit. Words ought to be a little wild, for they are the assault of thoughts on the unthinking. When a day that you happen to know is Wednesday starts off sounding like Sunday, there is something seriously wrong somewhere. The future is not a result of choices among alternative paths offered by the present, but a place that is created--created first in the mind and will, created next in activity. The future is not some place we are going to, but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found, but made, and the activity of making them, changes both the maker and the destination. |
