Confidence contributes more to conversation than wit. In jealousy there is more of self-love than love. We hardly find any persons of good sense save those who agree with us. It is easier to appear worthy of a position one does not hold, than of the office which one fills. A true friend is the greatest of all blessings, and the one that we take the least care of all to acquire. Hope, deceiving as it is, serves at least to lead us to the end of our lives by an agreeable route. We should often feel ashamed of our best actions if the world could see all the motives which produced them. The mind cannot long act the role of the heart. Gratitude is merely the secret hope of further favors. There are very few people who are not ashamed of having been in love when they no longer love each other. |
