Uncertainty and expectation are the joys of life. Security is an insipid thing. Thus happiness depends, as nature shows, less on exterior things than most suppose. They whom truth and wisdom lead, can gather honey from a weed. The darkest day, if you live till tomorrow, will have past away. Meditation here may think down hours to moments. Here the heart may give a useful lesson to the head and learning wiser grow without his books. Knowledge, a rude unprofitable mass, the mere materials with which wisdom builds, till smoothed and squared and fitted to its place, does but encumber whom it seems to enrich. Knowledge is proud that he has learned so much; wisdom is humble that he knows no more. Knowledge is proud that it knows so much; wisdom is humble that it knows no more. Knowledge dwells in heads replete with thoughts of other men; wisdom in minds attentive to their own. God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform. He plants his footsteps in the sea, and rides upon the storm. Absence of occupation is not rest; a mind quite vacant is a mind distressed. |
