Try as much as possible to be wholly alive, with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell and when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough. I don't like to see kids throw away their truth just because it isn't worth a dime in the open market. No city invites the heart to come to life as San Francisco does. Arrival in San Francisco is an experience in living. Human greatness is a rather difficult thing to account for, and more often than not one is mistaken in one's hunches about somebody one has met. He wanted to be a passenger on anything that was going anywhere, but most of all on a ship. He paints for the blind, and we are the blind, and he lets us see for sure what we saw long ago but weren't sure we saw. He paints for the dead, to remind us that -- great good God, think of it -- we're alive ... Everybody has got to die, but I always believed an exception would be made in my case. Now what? Every man in the world is better than someone else and not as good as someone else. Encourage virtue in whatever heart it may have been driven into secrecy and sorrow by the shame and terror of the world. But the world was my home and I was glad to be in it. |
