Nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time; the need for mankind to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to oppression and violence. Mankind must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love. Our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class, and our nation; and this means we must develop a world perspective. All labour that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence. The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. A good many observers have remarked that if equality could come at once the Negro would not be ready for it. I submit that the white American is even more unprepared. A man who won't die for something is not fit to live. A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defence than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death. Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted. An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity. Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal. |
