Life is like music; it must be composed by ear, feeling, and instinct, not by rule. You can do very little with faith, but you can do nothing without it. Life is like music, it must be composed by ear, feeling and instinct, not by rule. Nevertheless one had better know the rules, for they sometimes guide in doubtful cases, though not often. Genius is a nuisance, and it is the duty of schools and colleges to abate it by setting genius-traps in its way. Happiness and misery depend not on how high up or low down you are--they depend not upond these, but on the direction in which you are tending. I really do not see much use in exalting the humble and meek; they do not remain humble and meek long when they are exalted. If God wants us to do a thing, he should make his wishes sufficiently clear. Sensible people will wait till he has done this before paying much attention to him. If people would dare to speak to one another unreservedly, there would be a good deal less sorrow in the world a hundred years hence. If there is any moral in Christianity, if there is anything to be learned from it, if the whole story is not profitless from first to last, it comes to this: that a man should back his own opinion against the world's. Is life worth living? This is a question for an embryo not for a man. |
