My life is full of mistakes. They're like pebbles that make a good road. The forces of good and evil are working within and around me, I must choose, and in a free will universe I do have a choice. I often wonder: suppose we could begin life over again, knowing what we were doing? Suppose we could use one life, already ended, as a sort of rough draft for another? I think that every one of us would try, more than anything else, not to repeat himself, at the very least he would rearrange his manner of life, he would make sure of rooms like these, with flowers and light... Nature is trying very hard to make us succeed, but nature does not depend on us. We are not the only experiment. In science as in love, too much concentration on technique can often lead to impotence. There's a whiff of the lynch mob or the lemming migration about any overlarge concentration of like-thinking individuals, no matter how virtuous their cause. The mystery of government is not how Washington works but how to make it stop. Take hope from the heart of man, and you make him a beast of prey. Happiness isn't something you experience; it's something you remember. Conscience is the chamber of justice. |
