When you have nothing to say, say nothing. Happiness, that grand mistress of the ceremonies in the dance of life, impels us through all its mazes and meanderings, but leads none of us by the same route. Honor is unstable and seldom the same; for she feeds upon opinion, and is as fickle as her food. He that is good, will infallibly become better, and he that is bad, will as certainly become worse; for vice, virtue and time are three things that never stand still. Genius, in one respect, is like gold; numbers of persons are constantly writing about both, who have neither. Did universal charity prevail, earth would be a heaven, and hell a fable. It is only when the rich are sick that they fully feel the impotence of wealth. A man who knows the world will not only make the most of everything he does know, but of many things that he does not know; and will gain more credit by his adroit mode of hiding his ignorance than the pendant by his awkward attempt to exhibit his erudition. Love lives on hope, and dies when hope is dead; it is a flame which sinks for lack of fuel. Examinations are formidable even to the best prepared, for the greatest fool may ask more than the wisest man can answer. |
